Year In Review: 2016

If you haven’t already, check out my Year In Review: 2015 before you read this post. It’s become quite the tradition on my blog to write a year end review post on XO PIXEL!

My Blog

This year, I can honestly say that I LOVE blogging. It truly is a passion of mine. It’s amazing how much my blog has grown over the past two years. I started this blog in 2014 just as a way to showcase my design and coding skills, I wouldn’t have ever imagined that people would be coming to my blog and YouTube channel to learn skills for their personal projects and school assignments.

When you leave a comment on my blog or YouTube channel letting me know how much you love my content, or that my tutorials have helped you in any way, it truly makes me so happy. I’ve also gotten some really sweet emails from some of you. Never underestimate the power of positive comments! As a result, I just wanted to highlight a few (there’s much more) of my favorite comments that you’ve left me in 2016:

My YouTube Channel

This year, I managed to gain over 1.7K subscribers on my YouTube channel! I also have over 100,000 views on my channel which is amazing.  To celebrate 1K YouTube subscribers,  I held an awesome giveaway that had 200 entries on the dot. I’ve also been more consistent with posting content than I was last year.

My YouTube video views are high, so it tells me that people are genuinely interested in watching my videos. I love my YouTube channel and I love making videos for you to watch. So, if you haven’t already, subscribe to my YouTube channel for more great content coming to you in 2017!

Here are my 5 most popular YouTube videos in 2016:

My Job

I’ve got to say, 2016 has been a really great year for me. I’ve accomplished so many things while still being a full-time student. At my job, I was a web designer and front-end web developer. I also was able to exercise my other skills, such as graphic design, logo design, writing, and videography. Throughout my time at UHN, I managed to complete four major websites–one of which has been promoted on TV this holiday season across Canada to visit. That was defiantly a highlight for me this year. Feel free to take a look at my personal portfolio to see some great websites I worked on.

At my job, I had an awesome team, and I even made some friends that now read my blog and watch my YouTube videos. I learned so much, more than just design and coding skills. I learned organization and project management skills. I also learned how to discuss my work (i.e. mockups and design decisions) in large meetings and to my clients. Here are some web design projects that I completed:

  • UHN Research Website
  • Princess Margaret Doves of Hope Campaign Website
  • UHN Training website
  • Filmed & Edited a full training video
  • Wrote a script for a promotional video

Believe it or not, a skill that I’ve always struggled with was communication. I was told that I would be doing a live demo on how to navigate a website that I designed, to hundreds of summer students. At first, I was nervous about the whole thing, but then I saw it as a challenge and an opportunity for me to get better at my presentation skills. I’m glad that I did. It really helped me get more comfortable talking to larger groups of people. I’m still working on this skills, and I think the final test would be doing a TED Talk. Who knows, maybe one day I will!

Final Thoughts

Overall, 2016 has been an amazing year for me, both personally and professionally. This year, I made some amazing connections and I’ve also improved my web design, coding, and even videography skills. In 2015, I took a huge hiatus from my blog. I made a New Years resolution to really focus on XO PIXEL in 2016. I definitely made a huge improvement since then, and it shows. In 2017, one of my major goals is consistency–especially now that I’m finally finished my university program and have more time to focus on my blog and YouTube channel.

Thank you so much for supporting XO PIXEL. I’m so glad that you enjoy the content here. I encourage you to write for XO PIXEL if you want to teach something to your fellow XO PIXEL readers. Happy Holidays to you and your family. I also hope you have an amazing New Year. Cheers to 2017!
